This year, we are honoured to have Ross Garnaut, a distinguished economist and renowned public figure, as our keynote speaker.
Ross Garnaut is Emeritus Professor of Economics at The University of Melbourne and also at The Australian National University.
Professor Garnaut has written extensively on resource taxation, energy, climate change, global economic development, macroeconomic policy and more. He is one of the world’s leading minds on the role of rent in the economy and on policy approaches to capturing rent for public revenue. His book on the taxation of mineral rents, co-authored with Anthony Clunies Ross and published in 1983, remains one of the most influential texts on the subject.
He is the author of many books, including the bestselling Dog Days, Superpower and Reset. Most recently, the edited volume, The Superpower Transformation: Making Australia’s Zero-Carbon Future.
He has held senior roles in both business and industry, serving as economic adviser to Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke 1983-1985, and Australian Ambassador to China 1985-1988; as Chairman of Lihir Gold, BankWest, and as a Director of ZEN Energy; and as Chairman of the Australian Institute of International Agricultural Research, the International Food Policy Research Institute. and recently a Director of the Superpower Institute. Influential Reports to Australian Governments include Australia and the Northeast Asian Ascendency (1989); Review of Federal-State Financial Relations (1992); Review of the Wool Industry (1993); Garnaut Climate Change Review (2008) and Australia and the Global Response to Climate Change (2011).
